In a society ravaged by centuries of war between humans and vampires, a legendary warrior priest (Paul Bettany), a veteran of the last conflict, lives in an enclosed city ruled by the church. When a murderous pack of vampires kidnaps his niece (Lily Collins), the priest breaks his sacred vows and sets out to rescue her before the bloodsuckers put the bite on her. Critics Consensus

Sleek and stylish, but those qualities are wasted on a dull, derivative blend of sci-fi, action, and horror.

It's just a shame this world is populated with such one-dimensional, humourless characters.

Bettany is a great actor who does melancholy very well, he also has a sense of mischief. It would be nice to see it shine a bit before it, too, fades to grey.

Its visual style veers between bleached desert tones and slimy undercover dankness, but the 3D version is undistinguished.

It seems no matter how hard star Paul Bettany tries to establish himself as an action hero, he keeps choosing poor scripts.

The film looks good and the action sequences have zip, but the characters are underdeveloped and the dialogue is dire.

Paul Bettany is an intriguing choice as Priest, but his performance is so devoid of life that it might as well have been Brandon Routh.

I watched this on SyFy, and for a vampire movie it was everything I expected. I was entertained, and that's what a movie is supposed to do. People judge certain movies a little too harshly. This movie did what it came to do.

Love this movie, shame it wasnâ(TM)t longer.

Parts of this film looked very well done. This however is let down by a poor story line and even worse acting.

Film nerds will love spotting every unoriginal idea on display. There isn't a thing that isn't lifted from somewhere else. It's glossy enough, bit therein lies the rub. It's all style and no substance. It would have been better if Karl Urban and Paul Bettany had been cast in each others rroles. Urban does,a good line in tough guys. Instead he's reduced here to a Clint Eatwood impersonation that wouldn't get past the first round if Britain's Got Talent. Bettany, on the other hand is a crap tough guy but dies a decent turn in sinister Intellectuals. It's no accident he's the uber human and not an ass kicker in the Avengers movies. As for Cam Wotsisname who plays the sheriff, he shouldn't be in anything ever again. It's a fun enough hour odd, but you won't suffer if you don't spend it here.

slightly different take on a vampire movie but well done and consistent with itself. voices not overshadowed by special effects or music so you can actually hear the dialog.
