What to Know

Critics Consensus

Imaginative but often preposterous, The Box features some thrills but largely feels too piecemeal.

Is it an odd film? Certainly. Will it creep you out more than it engages you? Probably. Should we be rewarding folks who are willing to step out of bounds and make us think? Definitely. Go to Full Review

Kylo L Oct 20, 2018 I loved this movie and I don't understand all the bad reviews. The character Arlington steward (frank Langella) is excellent and very unique. The movie was very imaginative, which is why I liked it, it also covers some important themes - Greed, survival, and love. There are many elements to the story that are left unsaid, but they are implied. Maybe that is why the scores are so low, maybe the watchers couldn't keep track of what was happening. See more
Luke W Sep 14, 2018 What do I make of The Box? Well, this is a weird movie and after leaving the theater I couldn't make much sense of it. Made by the same guy who helmed Donnie Darko The Box is about a couple who receive a mysterious person one day who gives them a box and a proposition. The acting by James Mardsen and Cameron Diaz is serviceable and some sequences are pretty good. But then the plot needs to make sense. Looking around most reviews are similar in nature- a bit of a head scratcher. Still you can see it if you like these Twilight Zone kind of movies. See more
Hagrid M Aug 23, 2018 Everybody loves to hate Richard Kelly. I get it he doesn't conform to what subsidized mold 95% of the population wants to see. This is why I love his films, although he does strange things with story line he still manages to make his dreams come to life... and nightmares. The Box is no exception, I chalk it up to people misunderstanding his vision with jaded expectations when that is a fatal flaw in the viewer and not the creator. I'm sure you were expecting a nice little sci-fi romp with no pay off just the same thing you've seen 100,000 times. Sorry but this movie is kind of above the conventional standards of neanderthals which clearly make up most of the people who saw this movie. This movie is about moral and ethical dilemmas posed as an alien or paranormal experiment... simple to understand. And yet everyone thought inception was genius cause it held their hand and was like oh look how smart you are for figuring out nothing about the nonsense dream movie. So in a way I'm glad no one got this movie the way I did, it feels like i went to a private party everyone was invited to but they went blind folded of their own accord and wondered who turned off all the lights, so they blamed the party host. What I saw in this movie was a fun, well made little brain teaser and that's what i wanted. Richard Kelly has a style, don't like it? STOP WATCHING HIS MOVIES... See more
