In this moody Japanese horror film, newly-single mom Yoshimi Matsubara (Hitomi Kuroki) is enduring a bitter divorce and struggling to keep custody of her young daughter, Ikuko (Rio Kanno). As the unstable Yoshimi tries to make a fresh start in a new apartment, strange occurrences in the building gradually begin to take their toll. When Yoshimi and Ikuko both start seeing unsettling visions of a ghostly little girl, it's clear that they're being drawn toward the supernatural.

Leia L Apr 8, 2019 The main problem with this mother-daughter-tenement chiller is that it's not very scary. It shares some of the themes of classic movies like Don't Look Now, The Innocents, Repulsion, etc and when it isn't trying too hard is quite effective in dealing with themes of attachment and loneliness. But director Hideo Nakata overdoes the music stings and fails to exploit the real horrors of mental illness and grief. See more
Mar 29, 2019 Visually and thematically bleak, Dark Water is a creepy, slow building ghost story that effectively uses muted, dreary images and sound to explore the feelings and consequences of isolation and neglect. Grey days, almost constant rainfall, and yellow-tinted dirty water flashbacks characterize the film's pallete while suspense builds in the soundscape as heavy rain gives way to quiet moments interrupted by bursts of atmospheric music and the sound of dripping water. Anakin L May 25, 2018 Outstanding A-horror! Very powerful at the end of the movie. Lots of feels. The water got really creepy too.
Hagrid S Aug 30, 2017 Dark Water is a haunting ghost story with a pay off that stays with you.
George S Mar 17, 2017 Loved it. This is a tension building horror movie that keep you on the edge of your seat. It really keeps you there, because it doesn't flip you off with sudden ghosts out of nowhere. See more
Theodore R Mar 15, 2017 A slow moving story which leads to an anticlimax. Stress and sanity are explored throughout, but not convincingly enough. The ending leaves you wondering why the woman got in the elevator and didn't just move out of the apartment block. Dark Water places itself firmly in the horror genre but the scariest thing is that I paid £14.99 for it. I'm so disappointed I can't even muster the passion to produce a coherent review. See more
