This film seriously rocks. Funny, moving, dishy and beautifully made; there's an overhead shot of hockey players dramatically scrambling for a puck that looks like a living Rembrandt.

The VHS franchise follow up their best ever instalment (Halloween) with maybe their worst. Fantastic gore and creature design as always, but this music-themed anthology is never scary enough or funny enough.

NAZA succeeds as great journalism and great cinema alike. I won't soon forget the tone and framing of this film, as an ethnic cleansing and the spycraft that enables it is recounted with eerie stillness.

Miike uses his considerable talents to manipulate the viewer with this true-crime (if that's even the right phrase) melodrama, but dammit, he got me.

Entertaining if not illuminating, the ominous and roiling dramatic irony of Sorkin and Fincher's icy Social Network is flattened into an archetypical Sorkin schema for The Social Reckoning.

This is cinema with the difficulty setting on 'extreme' but if you can give it your attention and focus, you might just sink into its ambient pixelation and witness a kind of beauty that can't be contained by its medium.

If you got distracted by a couple of janky close-ups, you mustn't have been paying attention to the death-defying velocity of the camera, the stunningly detailed tangibility of the production design, and the rip-roaring score. An absolute triumph.

The hamster wheel of adulthood gets ironed out into an endless road with this witty thriller that riffs on both No Exit and Reality Bites. Phinehas Yoon is utterly fantastic.

It's tricky to cinematically realise the creative practice of writing, and this film hasn't cracked the code, but Kristen Stewart has still made a visually and sonically compelling movie, with Imogen Poots the astounding centre of her desilvering frame.

Very funny, very arch comedy that both elevates the conversation around sex and deflates it. Because while it may be the intersection at which all relationships are negotiated, it's also pretty silly too. Gregg Araki gets that.

Fantastically funny and uniquely sweet, but at its best and most pleasingly weird when Schoenbrun applies the tone of a Douglas Sirk-ian melodrama to the milieu of an '80s video nasty.

I respected the balletic musicality of the fight choreography, which really embraces the notion of the recurring pas de trois. But I really liked the bit where the two guys fought by throwing bikes at each other.

Jake Johnson, Mary Steenburgen and Aaron Chen are extremely affable in an earnest comedy that every so often shows flashes of extra life through an outrageously funny riff.

A film that believes the ironic detachment of its Looney Tunes violence is given weight by the gravely earnest treatment of its surrounding subject matter. Its fatal flaw is that it believes it can "earn" cruelty.

As much of a magic trick as any special effects extravaganza. I sit, mouth agape, watching as these miraculous distractions present themselves to John Wilson, who follows them to their beautiful resolutions, and wonder: 'How does he do it?'

A truly special comedy that is both hilarious and heartbreaking, and one that manages to find (or invent?) a third gear of serene violence by the end. A collision of tones that works in an uncommonly great way.
