It is the kind of popcorn movie that we do not get enough of today; action packed, silly, and filled with obvious bad guys getting their just desserts.

The V/H/S series has taken some fun risks in recent years. V/H/S Mixtape is another strong entry into the long running franchise. The GWAR segments make for the funniest wraparound in the history of the series, and the shorts are well done.

Penny Lane is Dead is one of the most uncomfortable watches of the year. The acting is top notch, with Wright-Mendelsohn giving a fantastically unhinged performance. In a year filled with strong female performances in horror, hers still stands out.

Unfortunately, things trail off in the back half. After an opening that is funny, intriguing, and frightening, Buffet Infinity strays from the course. It does more than is necessary and ends up being more confusing than interesting.

This is a Roth original and it may be the most Eli Rothiest thing he has ever done. The kills are over the top and the story is unremarkable in its best moments and irritating at worst.

Rubberhead is a frustrating watch. This had nothing to do with the documentary itself. It is sad to watch someone as creative and passionate as Steve Johnson unwilling to accept his faults.

Anyone who is a fan of the films of The Asylum will get a kick out of this. This documentary is filled with schlock, but the charming story at the center is what makes it work.

All of the usual cuteness has been removed. This hippo is a gigantic killing machine. There are some great shots of the animal, but the best ones take the audience right into the audience’s cavernous mouth.

A brief and unremarkable funeral scene leads to one of the best epilogues of any film this year. It involves some of the most powerful people in the world while hinting at a secret group controlled by the Vatican.

The third act is the most powerful. It is clear from when the action kicks in full that things can only head in one direction. Still, when things come to their natural head, it is an impactful moment.

It feels like writer Izabel Pakzad (The Deuce) came up with the admittedly gruesome ending but had trouble finding a way to get to it. And the characters and some very serious themes end up suffering because of it.

It does not take long for Chum to showcase its best features. The cold open features a bloody shark attack that sees the victim chomped in half. The moment will catch audiences off guard and make them sit up.

Throughout the entire runtime, it is an engrossing watch. The Python Hunt makes some missteps along the way, but it is one of the most unique and interesting releases of the year.

Once the outbreak happens, the whole movie becomes an exercise in trust. The obvious answer is you cannot trust anyone, but the journey getting there is a gore filled one. The excellent ending will catch viewers off-guard.

Due to its chaotic nature, Night Patrol is consistently fun. (The finale includes a mid-air battle between a Green Lantern-esque hero and a demon whose face splits open.) The problem is that nothing is ever explained to a satisfying degree.

Somehow, director Daniel Goldhaber (How to Blow Up a Pipeline) has done the seemingly impossible and brought a pseudo-documentary from the late 70s into the 21st century. Even more surprising, the new Faces of Death is actually good.
