Anybody that watches this film expecting an Egyptian-themed story of a bandage-wrapped undead monster is likely to feel short-changed by the wholly derivative possession movie that they actually get.

Sure it is disposable, and largely forgettable, but thankfully it is also quite watchable. This is a film that knows its niche and sits in it.

This is scrappy, nihilistic, and wildly adventurous stuff.

It is the old "curates egg" picture: the good bits are good, the bad bits bad, and for the viewer to find out how they respond to it they are simply going to have to watch it like everybody else.

The film stumbles along for a dreary 120 minutes, without a clear narrative focus, and it ends without actually providing a satisfactory climax.

A largely decent film, but I swear it struts around as if it is a masterpiece.

All things considered, this seems likely to be the least accomplished V/H/S film of the series so far.

It is not a film for complex narrative or multi-faceted characters. In all honesty it is not really a showcase for kung fu either. Instead it is heavy on stereotype, with a seam of absurdity that makes it a funnier experience than you might expect.

It is a collection of well-shot and paced sequences, and capably staged set pieces, but the underlying narrative is remarkably weak and the nuts-and-bolts structure is poorly conceived.

Easily the least interesting Fast & Furious movie that Universal ever made.

The bottom line is that, while The Fast and the Furious was a reasonably competent action film, 2 Fast 2 Furious feels less like cinema and more like a cartoon.

The Fast and the Furious may be derivative, and it’s honestly difficult to see the future billion-dollar franchise lurking inside, but at the same time it is cleanly made, unpretentious, and competently staged.

While it does not stretch its formula in any profound way, it does exactly what it advertises and is unashamed in doing it. I am not even a dog person really, but James and Odin’s adventure hooked me very effectively.

Its strength comes not from innovation but from a charming set of distinctive characters and a keen understanding of what makes a scary moment work.

Is it good? I’m inclined to write "no", but if viewers want an underwater thriller about forgettable passengers on an aeroplane getting picked off one by one by a swarm of computer-generated sharks, well then I’m not sure there is a superior option.

This is a case where many of the ideas are good, and the design work turns out to be fabulous, but the film that contains them feels a little wobbly and under-cooked.

The film boasts good actors in bad roles. James Caan effectively plays a walking cliche, but do his credit he almost gets away it by sheer force of personality.

None of this is sensational filmmaking, but it is solid genre entertainment. The Fog is a smart enough film to get in, throw a few scares at the audience, and get out again.
