A 1990s updating of the type of story that Raymond Chandler might have cranked out on his Underwood, The Last Boy Scout is an LA noir where the villains are pitch black and the heroes are all different shades of grey.

In a year when one of the largest hits has been Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, it’s ironic that the biggest Trojan Horse was actually a ridiculously expensive arthouse film smuggled into cinemas under the pretence of being a movie star-led comedy film.

Simply put, Padraic McKinley’s The Weight is excellent. It’s a tense drama that’s old-fashioned but expertly built with captivating storytelling, good characters and strong performances. It also looks great – so see it on the big screen if you can!

I don’t even know if they’ll ever try and make a film like this again, but it certainly won’t have the magic and charm that helps make Tequila Sunrise so special.

A solid enough big budget fantasy adventure, there’s plenty to enjoy in Masters Of The Universe. It won’t be for everyone, but if you’re in the mood for some dumb, well-acted fun, then it might just scratch that specific itch.

It’s a flawed film, but Michael manages to win you over with its energy and sheer power of its music – and it simply won’t stop ‘til you’ve had enough.

Deftly constructed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, The Name Of The Rose is an expertly crafted offbeat thriller. It eschews the obvious and delivers something that still feels fresh – no mean feat for a 40 year old film.

Chum has a pretty interesting premise, but it’s very much failed by the execution. The plotting is too contrived, the characters are too thin and a most of the performances are a little off.

When it comes to brutally honest documentaries on the making of troubled films, then Boorman And The Devil ranks high. This is insightful and entertaining, featuring enough inside gossip and behind the scenes machinations to keep film fans captivated.

You could argue that A Safe Distance needs more dramatic push on a narrative level to add some additional weight. You may be right, but ultimately the film very much engages as an intimate character study – and surely that was the aim.

I think that as a director Michael Gabriele has the chops – I just don’t think that this is the perfect showcase for his talents. Look, sometimes movies work and sometimes they don’t – and unfortunately, Unholy Night failed to hit the mark. A shame.
