What's interesting is that Bedward's film seeks to critique all that demonization from Hollywood. Yet, she doesn't let herself off the hook either.

If anything, it's essentially a time capsule, even by the admission of the attendees as a look back at a bygone era, and a way for the older Black folks to educate the younger ones.

I'm not sure why I should care about any of this. When it comes to Holmes, nothing new or interesting is learned about her. Therefore, I'm not sure why anyone would be compelled by watching her.

...Tariq's feature here could also be called a faith-based film. Unlike most in this country, this one puts the Muslim faith to the forefront. This isn't to the exclusion of other faiths. There is a very empathetic scene involving Mormons...

The quandary, which was in the Kurosawa film, is whether the wealthy parents should pay the ransom for the son of the poor parents. This film makes that quandary interesting by adding a racial component, and a political one.

It's not that the character can't be good or noble, but it pushes this story more toward fairy tale. Even though Perry's Prince Charming is a former prison inmate, he still comes across as Mr. Perfect, an angel archetype.

Cynically, it's about how humanity handles the aftermath of such a global catastrophe. Cynically, it's about not fighting back and not trying to stop the catastrophe. Cynically, it's about accepting defeat.
