A movie so bloated, ambitious, convoluted, and tonally all over the place that I can’t help admiring its insistence to dare the audience to keep up.

The looseness suits a coming-of-age film about a day that nobody realizes is important until it’s almost over.

Crawford and Mercado seem to see pieces of themselves in Jo and Raissa, and the movie gains something from that affection even when the screenplay is playing with familiar parts... That affection travels surprisingly far.

There’s a sharper, funnier, more focused movie inside "Hombre al agua." GarcĂa Bernal clearly knows how to frame it. He just keeps inviting too many other movies into the shot.

"Bruton" could have looked harder at what the institution did to its central character and what that institution does more broadly. Grashaw is more interested in what Bryan made of it, and for roughly two-thirds of the movie, that’s enough.

"Sender" finds plenty of new suspects, detours, visual tricks, and paranoid possibilities to fill its running time, though not always enough dramatic shape to justify them... Its answers are messier than its premise, but the unease is real.

Sort of funny stunts that grow tiresome each minute, but entertain in the slightest bit to keep the viewer hooked on a small dose of foolishness and nastiness.

"The Odyssey" plays like an ancient-world companion piece to "Oppenheimer"... Nolan remains fascinated by the moment when a man realizes his brilliance has carried him beyond the limits of his own moral imagination.

Whether or not you believe Joe and Angela stay together after dinner, you can see the possibility of change in both of them, which makes The Invite sting as you leave the theater after laughing plentifully.

"Leviticus" doesn’t have the formal mystery of the best of them. It can be blunt, and sometimes it explains the nightmare after it has already shown it to us. But when it finds its pulse, it cuts.

A mistake Parsons makes in his film is trying to give the place meaning himself and, in hindsight, removing the ambiguity, uncertainty, and melancholy it had.
