It feels like someone smuggled in a pirated VHS copy of the movie, handed it to the projectionist along with a wad of cash, and said quietly "Let ‘er rip." ... A searing indictment of ‘reality’ TV that burns up a movie screen and leaves it in ashes.

From a certain point forward, By Any Means falls into fantasy territory ... Any hint of sympathy or empathy feels entirely misplaced, unbalancing the film to such an extent that it becomes difficult to watch, leaving a sour taste in the stomach.

The narrative is far too familiar ... all the attempts to jazz it up for the big screen were ill-advised. As much as I enjoy post-apocalyptic films in general, The Dog Stars left me wishing it was better.

Although it sometimes feels overstuffed with goodness, The Magic Faraway Tree is pinpoint in its sentimentality. Although it is clearly a fantasy, the good-hearted film makes me want to believe in its reality.

Feeling very much like an unholy melding of a 1950s dinosaur movie set in 1980s suburbia, The End of Oak Street is utterly ridiculous, even if it is a ton of dumb fun, if you’re in the right mood for it.

Milly Alcock is quite good as Kara, though less convincing as Supergirl. The low-wattage movie that bears her superpowered name is quite alright as a non-apocalyptic adventure, though it never rises up to become essential.

A plaintive character study resides at the emotional core ... Like Peter Parker, many single people would rather have supportive friends, even if they don’t have a romantic partner. For us, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is our movie.

Ryuya Suzuki’s intensely personal film interprets the life of one individual as a giant mosaic spanning a century. ... A steady, unflappable presence, like a Japanese Forrest Gump, around whom the entire world changes constantly.

Unflinching in its brutality, The Furious is fueled by righteous desperation. ... the action becomes so intense that I never wanted to look away. When The Furious reaches its conclusion, it felt like a reminder that it’s okay to breathe. Now.

Masterfully directed by Steven Spielberg, Disclosure Day is the best UFO movie ever made. ... A thoroughly entertaining picture that very much wants to be more than the sum of its parts. It’s not, but it’s still a fun ride.

Completely self-aware and somewhat embarrassed that it’s a movie based on a toy, yet fully embracing, and sometimes mocking, its sillier aspects, and never taking anything — especially itself — too seriously. And it’s all the better for it.
