That’s the duality inherent to such a tragedy. The loss is unbearable, but the journey can often lead to new truths and purpose. It’s just a matter of letting oneself exist in the space between.

One of cinema’s greatest strengths is using fiction to give shape to our dark realities and reveal nuance. Heores and villains are reductive constructs. Aaron and Hank are but (superbly performed) men.

Orion delivers worthwhile commentary via a lo-fi, one-set sci-fi conceit that leans into its production design and performances rather than stretch its admirable special effects beyond their means.

While an affecting film that does well to consider the messiness of the situation and platform fantastic performances, it’s difficult not to wonder if a feature film wasn’t the best route to present it as anything but a reductive "both sides" argument.

Add a remarkable cast carried by Colman and Debicki and the sort of awe-inspiring practical effects we’ve come to expect from Weta and Wicker is truly firing on all cylinders to entertain and edify in equal measure.

Whitman is very good in his portrayal of tired and angry youth in desperate need of a release. But Crawford steals the show with a mix of pure-hearted paternal protector and quietly unwavering resignation … all while wearing a rubber fish mask.

Shot on 16mm via multiple cameras that surely captured hours of footage between all the rooms of Ellington’s home despite unfolding in one afternoon, I would have been just as engrossed at triple the runtime.

What it means is that the film doesn’t end up being about Omaha. It becomes about [Nick]. How he engages with his city. How he takes it upon himself to recognize [his] white privilege. How he hopes for better.

It also just a wonderful parable about not giving up. We each endure our Sisyphean struggles because we know how good it will feel when we finally push that boulder over the hill. So, never stop trying. You can do it.

Ross has the meatier role. It's a tragic roller coaster of emotions. That said, however, don't sleep on Bottomley's performance. Sometimes clarity makes things even worse because he's forced to helplessly watch it all burn.
