This is a simple film. A film of faces and bodies and lives well lived told with video 1978, 2003 and now 2025 that speaks to the ordinariness and the extraordinariness of humanity. A quiet, unadorned film...

I found myself wishing Wilson actually did focus on a little bit more on [concrete] when he was at times maybe having a little bit too much fun with his coterie of peculiar faces and even more peculiar personalities.

But such is often the power of a Benning film. By doing seemingly so little, he is able to say so much and, perhaps most importantly, allow us, the viewer, to consider it. The sweet magic of life.

What was Philippe attempting to do here? One suspects this is more a film for himself and for Novak than wider audiences who may not quite grasp just how important and incredible Vertigo is...

This is a film about what can happen when society and adults empower younger people and don’t just assume the worst from them. The kids may be all right if you let them be!

Valdez and his story is a guiding through-line for the viewer in understanding the importance of art and culture to Chicano people and their part of the American story, as well as the richness of what the Chicano identity really meant to people.

I noted to a friend that a film such as this is a real, genuine privilege to watch. Which maybe sounds silly, but it is! What an honour to be granted access into this once-in-a-lifetime experience some 50-odd years later.

That the filmmaking is so nauseously overbearing to boot makes this an unfortunate collision between empty and excess that I didn’t enjoy.

That nostalgic tact to tracing the story... is probably the right choice. I would have liked for Pankiw's film to really borough in on some of the thornier issues given it's 30 years removed, but it's hard to be too pressed by the choice.

This man’s family is all very nice and lovely and the home movies we see recorded across decades are sweetly affecting, but the truth is there is also a whole lot of the family stuff that feels less than essential.

This is a biography, fairly standard in its conception, I suppose, that nonetheless takes on the form of an essential queer text much like the very works of its subject, Barbara Hammer.

The mystery of Buzzy and the quasi red string theories that it provokes in people is perhaps a far less interesting than the general vibe of it all, which is ever so off-kilter and strange. I wish Bailey had perhaps honed in more on that.

I'm not sure Herbert is particularly interesting enough to warrant a full documentary about himself... Nor do I think the film really goes above and beyond the call of duty in telling his story beyond hitting all of the beats that one might expect.
