I’m forever grateful to the brilliance of Tarell Alvin McCraney and Barry Jenkins for this film. It is an absolutely perfect deconstruction of toxic masculinity and the patriarchy that keeps men and boys from accessing the depths of love and connection.

Hathaway’s never been so deliciously evil. It’s unfortunately wasted on a predictable drivel of a script. It’s supposed to be campy, not a comedy. It’s a ridiculous disaster of a film. And Johnson’s dead-face acting is trolling all the way to the bank.

Alejandro G. Iñárritu is a genius and Digger is his opus. Digger is a profound wrestling match wherein Iñárritu wonders aloud whether art in the face of catastrophe is worth it. My answer is a resounding yes.

Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother is about Your Dad and how hard he has it. Far too often in a man’s vision, Black women and girls get flattened or erased on the journey—even when the hadiths of Muhammad remind them three times not to.

The Julia Set means well; writer-director Niki Byrne wants to explore the rare topic of female genius. And Alex Dillard is a scene-stealer in the role of Julia’s brother. But at times the drama feels both underwritten and cartoonishly overdone.

Because [Erivo's Tessa] never wrestles with her earlier "belief" in the law and her actual complicity in the legal system that failed her, her big speech condemning the legal system [and the overall film] falls flat.

The Black man’s failures, isolation and lack of community as opposed to the white woman’s abundance of community and hopeful future awaiting her in the end feel like a violent lack of imagination. But, consider the source.

My favorite film from TIFF, by a mile. Scott gives his best performance to date. It’s a reminder that there is a power and a purpose in the crafting of art that our tech overlords and AI slop makers couldn’t even fathom.

Laugh-out-loud film will literally go off the rails. Think B.A.P.S. plus Blade Runner and the collage art of Mickalene Thomas. And claymation! Hang on and enjoy the riotous, liberating ride.

A navel-gazing thought experiment of a movie that laughs at our pain. Borgli was not up to the task of tackling the impact of the racial imagery he was creating or sensitively handling a uniquely American problem.
