Watkins mounts some memorably terrifying (and squishy) moments, particularly a sequence in a turbulence-tossed airplane in which Matt attempts to cut apart his eyelids with some tiny but very sharp scissors. (Somewhere, Buñuel and Dalà are smiling.)

It’s disappointing enough that the movie has filched so many of its good ideas from elsewhere, and even worse that it’s picked up some bad ones along the way.

The greatest flaw of The Social Reckoning is that David Fincher isn’t directing, but its greatest strength is Sorkin’s script, which the writer directs with greater competence and energy than earlier behind-the-camera efforts.

There’s a lovely central story about two lifelong best friends, and the movie buries that story in so much plot, mythology, magical creatures, and mini-quests that it dares viewers not to lose the thread.

The storytelling is beautifully done here -- it's so much about the push-pull between the rural and the urban, modernity and tradition.

The finished product shares many of the original film’s flaws, from careening shifts in tone to not enough screen time for Stockard Channing and Dianne Weist as Sally and Gillian’s wise, eccentric aunts.

Amid the pervasive wackiness, which never gets tiresome, Burch skillfully weaves in both a legitimate mystery (its real-life ramifications bring to mind another Todd Haynes film, Dark Waters) and some genuine character moments.
